Hanukkah Machete Attack in NY

5 people were stabbed after a black male entered Rabbi Rottenburg’s Shul, located in the Forshay neighborhood in Monsey, New York, and pulled out a machete.

Notably, the attack occurred on the last day of Hannukah.

As VosIzNeias.com reports, the alleged assailant pulled off the cover and stabbed at least 5 people.

One of the victims was stabbed in the chest. Two of the victims of the attack were taken into hospital as critical. One of the victims was stabbed at least 6 times. The fifth/least severe case had a cut in his hand.

The perpetrator then ran out and escaped in a vehicle. His plates were spotted before he left (HPT-5757 per the person who saw it and we confirmed it with him directly – a Gray Nissan Sentra).

The attack occurred at a rabbi’s house in the religious community — the latest attack on Orthodox Jews near New York City. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has come under increasing criticism for the attacks, especially after several suspects in recent violent antisemitic attacks were released as courts have rushed to comply with the state’s new “bail reform” legislation, which is supported by the de Blasio administration, and which takes full effect Jan 1.

On Sunday broadcast of MSNBC’s “Live,” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo commented, “We tend to treat these situations as isolated episodes, but really if we just connect the dots, we have a pattern of hate in this nation that is only getting worse. We’ve seen almost weekly attacks on people based on race, color, creed. It’s hate-motivated. Apparently, there was another shooting in Texas today in a church. We’ve seen attacks against African-Americans, Latinos, LGBTQ community. And let’s call it what it is and let government act because this can destroy this nation. It is corrosive. It’s an American cancer.”

He continued, “It starts at the top, and then it goes on to a point where it becomes viral across this nation. And it is now viral. And you see it coming to the surface in different manifestations from coast to coast. And we’re comforted treated it as isolated episodes, but there’s a pattern to all of this, and it spells hate.”

De Blasio condemned the attack, but also came under immediate criticism for not doing enough about antisemitism:

Despite the SPLC constantly fanning the flames of hysteria over domestic extremism, they remained completely silent about the domestic terror attack against Hasidic Jews, presumably because it was carried out by a non-white person.

Monsey mass stabbing suspect Grafton Thomas, 37, was arrested “at least seven times” since 2001 according to a report from the Washington Post:

A man barged into a rabbi’s home with a long knife and stabbed five people Saturday night in New York state, officials and witnesses say, shattering Hanukkah celebrations and renewing fears of attacks on the country’s Jewish community.

The suspect in custody, identified by police as 37-year-old Grafton E. Thomas of Greenwood Lake, N.Y., has pleaded not guilty to five counts of attempted murder and one count of burglary, according to the Associated Press.

[…] Local news outlets reported that Ciganek said in court that her client had no criminal record. But according to a security official briefed on the case, Thomas has been arrested at least seven times since 2001, on offenses that include assault, resisting arrest, killing or injuring a police animal, driving while under the influence, possessing controlled substances and menacing a police or peace officer. He appears to have received a jail sentence only for a 2013 arrest for possession of a controlled substance.

Officials have yet to announce a motive in the stabbing in Monsey, about 30 miles north of Manhattan, but state leaders were quick to denounce the attack as an act of anti-Semitism.
